Dysport works very similarly to Botox. It’s also an injectable that relaxes the facial muscles that cause wrinkles.
Dysport spreads a little more widely, making it ideal for larger treatment areas like the forehead. Some patients experience faster onset of their Dysport results compared to Botox, but the results last about the same amount of time.
During your consultation, we can talk through whether Dysport or Botox will be better for helping you achieve your goals. Sometimes, we’ll recommend using both for different areas.
It’s not required, but we recommend avoiding blood-thinning medications, alcohol (which also acts as a blood thinner), and strenuous exercise for a day or 2 prior to your appointment. This helps lessen the chance of bruising or swelling after your injections.
Most patients see results within about 7 to 10 days after their treatment. Some patients report seeing results a little sooner than that, but we always tell patients to expect it to take about a week. It takes time for the Dysport to relax your muscles and for the wrinkles to fade.
There’s no downtime, and there is very little aftercare prep that you need to plan for following a Dysport treatment. We typically recommend avoiding rubbing the injection site or lying down for the first few hours, because that can displace the product and affect your results. It’s also a good idea to avoid strenuous exercise for the first 24 hours because that will increase blood flow, which could also potentially cause your Dysport to spread and be less effective.
Results from Dysport typically last 3 to 4 months. The exact duration will depend on your unique treatment plan and how fast your body breaks down the product. Most patients are able to enjoy their results long term by planning for maintenance treatments 3 to 4 times per year.
The best thing you can do to extend your Dysport results is take care of your skin. Regular facials and a quality at-home skincare routine help keep your skin healthy and perky. That way, when Dysport gets to work on your muscles underneath, the results really show.
